Aquitaine was named 'The Land of Waters' by the Romans. The
department has it all - lush valleys and gentle hills with rows
of fruit trees and renowned vineyards. In Spring, the orchards
are white with blossom, in Summer, strawberries, cherries, peaches,
plums, and tomatoes stock the local markets. The far west has
long beaches backed by beautiful dunes and scented pine forests.
To the south, the forested plains give way to the majestic valleys
and peaks of the Pyrenees - this is where you will find Le Pehau.
Osserain is on the frontier between
the Pays Basque and Béarn regions of France. During your stay
at Le Pehau, you are uniquely placed to enjoy both traditional
cultures. There are many similarities between the two regions,
but just as many differences - the style of property, the wines,
the cheeses, the dialect, the list goes on.
A famous culinary dish of the region
is piperade, a tomato and pepper based sauce. Indeed, in Salies
de Béarn the national holiday on August 15th is celebrated with
a 'fête du Piperade'. In the Béarn region the dish is prepared
as a tomato based sauce, yet just over the border in the Pays
Basque, the dish is served cooked with egg and takes on the consistency of an omlette.
